digiseza

a digital exchange of the senses

"I hear a note by one of the fellows in the band and it’s one color. I hear the same note played by someone else and it’s a different color. When I hear sustained musical tones, I see just about the same colors that you do, but I see them in textures. If Harry Carney is playing, D is dark blue burlap. If Johnny Hodges is playing, G becomes light blue satin."
Duke Ellington, as quoted in Don George, p. 226

What is Digiseza?

Digiseza is a portmanteau of digital synesthesia, synesthesia being the mixing of senses (seeing colors when hearing sound). Where the worlds of the senses and technology intertwine, digiseza is realized. We see digiseza in light shows, concerts, and music visualizers. This is a portfolio of digiseza hand-crafted by Jeff Verkoeyen.

Sineseza

Auditory-Optic

The first large-scale digiseza installation, our living room has been augmented with lights that react to the music being played. Sineseza is a custom-built circuit that listens to music from an mp3 player and can power multiple individual light sources.
